Filtration

Postby stuartb » Mon Mar 01, 2010 11:40 pm

Hi, been getting conflicting stories.. I am in process of setting up a Nano tank. I have been advised I dont need a filter, just to run a Koralia and skimmer etc, apparently the live rock/sand etc will cleanse the water, along with the skimmer. I have an FX5 and a 50 Gallon tank. The guy who gave me advice owns an aquarist shop in Glasgow and I do trust him, his overall knowledge of fish etc is genrally well regarded.

Hi Stuart :wavy: Good advice the live rock does it all for you. Skimmer is a good idea as it is amazing what they pull out of the water. But I run my Nano without but it is smaller than yours 48litre.
You will get great advice on here from some very experienced people, I am still learning there is a lot involved in owning a Marine tank

Hi Stuart :wavy: and welcome to ReefSafe/

The owner of the fish shop is indeed correct

The live rock and sand / and all associated microscopic life make up your biological filtration .. the skimmer removes DOC ( which is Dissolved Organic Compound ) in essence fish waste and dissolved foods etc.

Hi Stuart

Live rock, flow and a skimmer is all you need apart from proper testing and regular water changes. External filters can create more problems than they solve.

BTW - I live in Glasgow if you need to have a chat some night.

What shop gave you this good advice ? Waterworld ?
