Torch feeding

Postby Wilky » Thu Jan 28, 2010 9:31 pm

As i fed the tank earlier i noticed the torch catch a full PE mysis shrimp. I know that it will catch bits of food, but this was the first time i have ever seen a coral catch a large peice of food and i spent a good half hour watching it manouver it into one of its mouths and devour it. :eat:

It now looks more inflated than i've ever seen it, i'm really happy with how this coral is doing it was a decent sized frag when i got it from Fishmans but was a single head starting to take shape into 3, its now got three full heads.

After watching this its made me think that i should be target feeding the LPS and rics for the best health, how often should i do this? once a week maybe or less?

If your daily or weekly frozen batch of particulate food is made up of a little of something for everything then there is no need to feed a coral.

I know it's been said before .. but can you even imagine that a dead shrimp ( or similar ) would ever land on a coral and stay on it long enough to be devoured. Every moving critter on the reef would get it first.

Calanus / red plankton / oyster eggs / lobster eggs / phyto etc are small enough for the corals to take and eat straight away. Anything is false husbandry.
