New tank, but what size sump

Postby l66 » Tue Jul 20, 2010 9:52 pm

Evening all

I am looking for a little advice. I am about to order either a 54 x 30 x 24 high or a 48 x 30 x 24 central weir drilled for 25mm twin stand pipes and a 32mm return. I have all my equipment stockpiled and I have started collecting live rock in a vat.

Having never had a sumped system, I am not sure what size sump to order. I plan to run LR and algae in it lit 24 7 with a deltec APF600 a FR509 and an OR3500 as my return.

Thanks

Ian

Ideally as big as you can however this will depend on what you want to keep outside of the sump and inside the cabinet - eg. skimmer / FR509 / balling containers & pump

You might find it beneficial to increase to an OR6500 and tee off supplies to your skimmer and reactor

3 section sump

section 1 for skimmer and phos reactor

section 2 for LR and algae aerated and turbulated by the returns from skimmer and reactor

section 3 for the return

==

around 40" would be ideal with equal sized sections .. width and depth to fit the cabinet .. make sure you leave enough clearance to get the top off the skimmer.

I would forget the ocean runner and use a Laguna as your return instead - cheaper, quieter, and more energy efficient.

get as big a sump as poss Ian :hammer:

more water, less prob.bigger sump, more scope to use whatever you want down there....

I personally use an eheim 1262 for return and an eheim 5000 compact for skimmer supply

cant fault either

Ok thanks to all who have replied - so I will reconsider my return pump. I will look at the laguna as suggested, so I may have 2 OR3500 to find a home for!!

So a Sump something like 40 x 24 x 18 high should work fine split into 3 sections as miggsy suggested.
